Solent
summary
For
Sailing in the UK, the
Solent is the best place to be. With it's sheltered waters
and many
ports
and
anchorages
you will never be far from a great place to stop.
The
Solent encompasses a large area of protected water and
is probably one of the busiest, most famous sailing areas
in the world; home for thousands of leisure craft.
 Fast
tides, shallow banks, large natural harbours, historic
defensive forts and a submerged barrier all provide an
interesting
mix of sailing for all levels of ability.
The
area is generally divided into the East and West Solent,
with Southampton Water to the River Medina at Cowes forming
the dividing line.
Apart
from the marinas, the Solent has many mooring buoys and
anchorages which can be used.
The
East Solent has the harbours of Portsmouth, Langstone and
Chichester on the mainland, and Ride and Bembridge on the
Isle Of Wight, plus many anchorages like the beautiful Osbourn
Bay.
The
West Solent has the Beaulieu River and Lymington on the
mainland and Newtown and Yarmouth on IOW. Anchorages include
Totland bay and Alum Bay by the famous Needles lighthouse.
